Are Your Rabbit's Toys Really Safe?

[ad_1]

Most people like to entertain their rabbits with toys. They may keep special toys in a basket for when their bunny comes out to play, or they may keep some toys in the rabbit's hutch. No matter where your rabbit's toys are kept, it is important to make sure they are safe for your pet .

Safe Toys

One of the safest toys you can give your rabbit does not look like much, but your rabbit will have a ball with it. Take an empty toilet paper tube and stuff it full of hay. This will keep your bunny happyly amused for hours while they unstuff the hay, eat it and then chew on the cardboard tube. Be sure to stuff the hay in tightly … it will present your bunny with more of a challenge.

Other safe toys include cardboard boxes, hard plastic balls and empty tuna fish cans that have had sharp edges removed. These toys let your rabbit have fun chewing, rolling and tossing. It is great fun to watch them when they are playing.

You can make tunnels out of cardboard mailing tubes or large PVC pipe. Paper bags offer as much fun to your rabbit as they do to the cats who discover them. Shredded paper is fun for them to toss around. If your pet really enjoys chewing, give them dried pine cones, freshly cut branches from apple or willow trees or tie some hay into knots. If you are giving apple branches, make sure the tree has not been sprayed.

Wooden bird toys are excellent. You can hang them in the hutch and your rabbit can bat them, push them and chew on them without any problems. Woven grass mats not only give them a cushy spot to rest, they provide hours of chewing pleasure. They are also very cheap, so when it is all chewed up, you simply replace it with another.

Unsafe Toys

Anything with soft plastic or rubber should be avoided. Cat toys with openings in them can be easily chewed up by your rabbit. You do not want them to swallow any bits of plastic or rubber. Watch your pet if you have a towel or other fabric with them. They can swallow fibers that can cause digestive problems.

While your rabbit will love chewing on a wicker basket, do not give them anything like this that has been painted or varnished. The chemicals in the coating can poison your pet. Evaluate everything that you may consider giving them a critical eye: will it crack or break? Can your rabbit take a bite out of it? If your rabbit manages to eat part of it, will it harm them?

The easy answer is do not give your rabbit anything that will crack, break or that they can bite unless it is made of untreated, natural materials. Keeping your pet safe is your job as their caretaker. By watching what kind of toys you give them, you will be preventing health problems and keeping them happy.
