The Correct Way to Clean Your Washing Machine

Over time, washing machines can develop a foul odor. This unpleasant smell can be transferred to your clothing and keep them from getting completely clean. Like all appliances, Bosch and Zanussi washing machines need to be maintained to ensure they work at their optimum performance. To help get rid of unpleasing odors or to prevent them from occurring all together, you will need to clean your washing machine once a month.

The first step to cleaning your Bosch or Zanussi washing machine is to run it on the largest load setting with the hottest water possible. Once the machine starts to agitate, pour in three to four cups of distilled white vinegar as well as a half a cup of baking soda. Allow the machine to continue on a few minutes so both elements mix completely with the water and then turn it off. The contents should sit for at least 30 minutes, but not more than an hour so the vinegar and baking soda has a chance to work into the built up grime.

The next step is to restart the cycle. This time allow the machine to complete the wash cycle. When the water starts to drain, you have two choices. If your machine model allows you to, you can switch to the spin cycle at this time, which will help loosen any remaining dirt. If you can not switch to the spin ratio, simply allow the water to drain and turn the machine off.

The last step is to wipe down the inside of your washing machine by hand. You can use a cloth with a solution that is equal parts hot water and distilled white vinegar, or just a plain wet rag. You need to wipe down the entire inside, including the bottom, the agitating blades, and the part of the tub under the lid. To help get the hard to reach places, a wire toilet brush can come in handy. Be sure to remove and clean the fabric softener and bleach dispenser, if your machine is outfitted with these.

If your Zanussi or Bosch washing machine continues to carry a foul odor after following the above steps, this may mean that there is some grime inside the parts enclosed in the machine. If the warranty on your machine is still valid, you can call the manufacturer and have them send someone for maintenance. If it is no longer under warranty, an appliance repair shop in your area can probably clean the washing machine for you. To avoid residue gathering in your machine, there are a few minor changes you can make to your laundry habits. You can use less detergent and exchange commercial fabric softener for vinegar.
