How to Replace a Laptop Keyboard

Replacing a laptop keyboard might be difficult for someone as it is perceived to be a technical work but actually it is not. By following some simple steps one can replace the laptop keyboard with ease.

First step is to make sure that you have switched off the power and taken off the battery. Also you need to unplug it from the switchboard in order to avoid any hassle. Once you are done with it, you should turn over the laptop and remove all the screws behind it. Although different laptop models have different screws but you can easily find the screws to remove them.

Normally, the keyboards are put in a plastic sheet which is screwed into the machine. So here you also need to remove the screws in order to remove those plastic sheets. If there are no plastic sheets then probably there would be some clamps which can be removed easily.

Once you are done with the removing the plastic sheets there would be some plastic leftovers in the keyboard. These plastic pieces should be removed careful and it can be done with a help of some plastic pick or tooth pick. It is highly advisable not to use any kind of needle which can really damage the other parts of machine.

Now you are done with all screws at the back, you should remove the screws at the top because in some laptop models there are some screws at the top which should be removed before you actually remove and replace the keyboard. Once all screws are removed, you will notice that your laptop keyboard is connected with a thin data cable which is directly attached to the motherboard right at the bottom. To remove the keyboard nicely, you can use the same tooth pick so that you can lift the plastic connectors which are holding in this data cable. You will notice that the entire keyboard is free and you can easily lift it up.

You have successfully done the first part and now it is the time you can replace the old laptop keyboard with the new one. First thing first, take the new keyboard out of the plastic sheet and fix it in between the plastic connectors which are present on the main board. You need to make sure that the entire new keyboard is fixed. Now attach the data cable carefully. You can use the same pick you used previously to do the same. Make sure that all of the holes or clamps are directly aligned with the screw space so when you are tightening the screws again, you can do it accordingly. Finally refasten your laptop keyboard from the top and if you need to remove any plastic pieces repeat the same way you did it previously.

Now tighten all the screws from the back and put the laptop's battery back in the place so that you can see whether your keyboard has been successfully replaced or not. Once you are done with tightening the screws, switch on your laptop and if you hear multiple beeps at the start then probably you need to remove all the steps again. Go to the BIOS by pressing F2 or DEL button to check whether keyboard has been detected in it or not.
