When we’re buying sex toys, we usually pay plenty of attention to what they actually do. Do they vibrate? Rotate? Twirl? Pump up? Feel real?

Silicone Sex Toys
Silicone sex toys are very versatile, and have a pleasing semi-real feel with a reasonable price tag. To care for silicone toys:
- If it doesn’t have a motor or wires, you can boil it or put it in the dishwasher between uses
- Use soap suitable for your skin and water to wash them off
- DON’T use silicone lube with silicone toys. They’ll react and lose their shape. You can put a condom on your toy first if you only have silicone lube available – just make sure the lube doesn’t spread down past the bottom of the condom.
Cyberskin Sex Toys
These luxe toys feel amazing… you’ll want them to last. To care for Cyberskin:
- DON’T use silicone or oil based lube with Cyberskin either
- Wash with antibacterial soap and warm water after every use
- Store Cyberskin toys like you would a musical instrument – out of direct sunlight (get that dildo off your front windowsill!), between 5 and 25 degrees Celsius, etc.
- Wrap your Cyberskin toy in a cloth or something soft before you store it.
Elastomer / Jelly Toys
These softer toys are quite budget friendly and feel nice, but cannot be completely disinfected because the material is porous. To care for them:
- Wear condoms on elastomer or jelly sex toys if you want to share them
- Wash them with antibacterial soap and water immediately after use
- Don’t boil them
- However, you’re free to use whichever type of lube you prefer with elastomer or jelly sex toys
Hard Plastic
Hard plastic sex toys are quite common and cost effective. Despite the feel, they are porous – but can’t be boiled. Care for them by:
- Doing an antibacterial soap and water cleanup and drying them thoroughly
- Use a condom if you’re sharing
Glass
Glass sex toys can be warmed or cooled, can be boiled, and can actually be pretty nice to look at! Use glass toys with care, though:
- Feel free to boil your glass toy to disinfect it – just don’t run it under cool water to cool it off before putting it away!
- Inspect your glass toys before each use for cracks, which might cause it to break during use
- Don’t use them in the bathroom or on tiled floors – glass is extra slippery when lubed
- Only warm or cool your glass if the manufacturers indicate that its safe to do so.
