Marisol Malaret – The First Miss Universe From Puerto Rico

Born on October 13, 1949, Marisol Malaret was the first Puerto Rican who won the prestigious title of Miss Universe in 1970 in Miami, USA. When Malaret won the crown, she received one of the biggest welcoming that ever happened in her home country when she arrived in Luis Munoz Marin International Airport.

Malaret started working at an early age because of his father’s death and her mother’s illness. She used to work for a telephone company as an executive secretary. She was said to be persuaded by Carmen Andino, a make up artist, to join Miss Puerto Rico beauty pageant. Her stunning beauty, strong will, and perfect ethics made her not only the crowd favorite but also to win the crown.

During her reign, Malaret became a cover for countless gossip and entertainment magazines in Puerto Rico and across the globe. She also actively participated in numerous advertising campaigns and has been a motivational speaker for aspiring businessman and young women.

After completing her reign as the Miss Universe, Malaret became a famous celebrity and hosted her own TV show. She co-hosted with Eddie MirĂ³ one of the highest rated TV shows during the 70s and 80s – the Noche de Gala, (Gala Night Ball). She also worked as a magazine editor and founded Imagen in 1986 – Puerto Rico’s first women’s magazine. In 1992, she created Caras, which she headed until the year 2002. She also co-owned a famous boutique La Femme and even opened her own European-concert home store En Casa.
