Trade Shows – Suitable Attire

A trade show is a great chance for you to meet possible customers and promote what you are selling. Dressing for success ensures you'll be a winner at a trade show. Here are some tips on choosing appropriate clothes for a trade show.

Step 1:
Choose a comfortable pair of shoes. It will be very hard for you to sell a million bucks worth of services or product sporting sneakers. Leather shoes are a must for trade shows. Polish them but make sure they are not so shiny that they become distracting. If you wear dark leather shoes, the socks must be dark also.

Step 2:
Do not overdo accessories. For ladies, a couple of accessories work well for a trade show. Anything bulky or flashy should be avoided because it can distract potential customers. Wear smaller jewelry instead of diamonds or pearls. For men, keep the outfit simple and wear an unobtrusive belt buckle – (no, do not wear your cowboy buckle for a trade show!)

Step 3:
No blue jeans! This may seem obvious but you should not wear jeans to a trade show. They are not particularly professional. The clothes you choose should represent your company so dress with high-quality. Wear khaki pants instead of jeans and collared shirts instead of t-shirts.

Step 4:
Dress to impress. Generally, you need to dress better than you would in an office environment to be successful at a trade show. Although people will tell you that a t-shirt and pants are acceptable for a trade show, your goal should be for a more professional look. In addition to a long-sleeved button down shirt, you should also bring a matching jacket. At a minimum, aim for a 'business casual' look.

Step 5:
Complete your professional attire with a customized name tag. A permanent name tag is a good investment for future trade shows. It is definitely an improvement over the "Hi, I am _____" sticky label. Trade show goers will be less afraid to talk to you about what you are selling if they know your name. This accessory is imperative.

Step 6:
Always be aware of the fact that you are not in your office. While casual attire may be acceptable in the office, entering a trade show environment will cause the rules to change. You always have to look presentable and professional at a trade show. Make sure you look good for a trade show; Ensure that your clothes are wrinkle free, your hair is trimmed, and that you do not smoke, drink or do anything before the show that might make you seem unprofessional. You should look (and smell) clean and fresh.
