The Importance of Using a Registered Gas Engineer

[ad_1]

To put it simply, gas is not something to take chances with or to practice your DIY skills on. Using a registered gas engineer simply makes sense.

Why? It's simple:

  • gas systems are perfectly safe when they have been installed or maintained by a qualified expert – ie a registered gas engineer;
  • where this is not the case, you have the risk of potentially dangerous situations arising;
  • gas appliances and systems will operate more economically and efficiently;
  • by law in the UK, engineers working on gas systems and appliances must be safe registered – that essentially means being registered on a central database as having met the required qualifications and standards (being CORGI registered alone is no longer sufficient);
  • the database site can be found at the gas safe register website;
  • a gas safe registered engineer should always be able to show you their ID card as evidence that they hold such accreditation, which shows their photograph, their license number and expiration date. On the reverse it will show the categories they can legally work on;
  • to become a qualified gas engineer involuntarily considering and typically an apprenticeship under supervision – nobody that has failed to undergo such training can legally or practically be qualified to work on a gas system;
  • before allowing anyone to touch your gas systems, check not only their id and registration but also that their registration is current;
  • it can not be stressed strict enough that general handymen or builders should not be allowed to touch gas systems unless they also hold the above qualifications – in fact, no responsible general builder would try to convince you otherwise;
  • as touched on above, while DIY may be both fun and cost-effective in many areas around the home, gas systems are not one of them – be clear that if you dabble with gas systems without knowing what you're doing, then the result could be tragic involving involving serious damage, injuries and possibly even deaths;
  • you may find that your domestic insurance policies (buildings and contents) may stipulate certain requirements relating to gas systems maintenance and the need to have all such work contracted by qualified personnel – you will invalidate your insurance by failing to comply;
  • Finally, remember also that if you're a landlord, the law requires you to conduct landlords gas safety inspections annually in addition to periodic service and maintenance of your gas appliances and system – a requirement that may only be deemed to have been met if a registered gas engineer is involved.
