Peacock – India's Blue Featured Beauty

The Peacock is the male Indian peafowl that is recognized as one of the most beautiful birds in the world. Classified as the 'National Bird of India', Peacocks are most certainly the pride of India. They belong to family of Pavo Cristatus and can be found in the woodlands and forests through Inida, Srilanka and Nepal. In India the peacock is often known as 'mor' among its habitants. The average lifespan of the Indian Peacock is around 20 years of age.

Peacocks are one of the largest species of birds. They are not only popular in India, but have caught the attention of people all over the world. These magnificent bird do not migrate. Peafowls are mainly divided into three categories -the most common among them are Indian Peafowl, the Green Peafowl and White Peafowl.

The male peafowl is about 107 cm long long with long necks and legs. They weigh around 5 kg and are highlighted with a fan shaped crest on their head. They are omnivorous, eating grasses and berries as well as small snakes and lizards too. The tree toes face forward and one backward. It has long brilliantly colored train that contains as many as 200 feathers with shiny green, gold and blue markings which look like eyes. In India peacocks were associated with the all seeing sun and in Greek mythology these 'eyespots' were said to be hundred eyes of the giant Argos. When the monsoon comes peacock, dances in the rain, enthralling all with its elegant feathers, forming a spectacular display.

Native to Asioa, Peafowls a now be found on almost every continent, including Asia, Africa, North America and Europe. They have been domesticated in many parts of the parts. Earlier the peacock were bred for food but now the haunting of peacocks have been baned in India.
